Poverty Reduction

POVERTY REDUCTION

Darra Adam Khel is on average area of poor people. In General, people are mostly relayed on income from mountains. There is little land available for cultivation and even in that most of it is without proper water supply.
The war on terror and then the rise of militancy in the Tribal Area of Pakistan strongly affected Darra Adam Khel. Many people lost their work/business. Woman whom main income source were woods from the mountains are unable to go to mountain. They cannot keep any animal as they cannot take it out to the mountains because of these mountains being with either army or with militant.
These circumstances make the situation really hard for the already poor people of the area. Afridi Welfare Trust is working for the poverty reduction in Darra Adam Khel. The main objective of this program is to help the poor to provide them with their own source of income.

MODEL

Since, in providing “needy” people with income source depend totally on person own situation. It is really difficult to have one single model which can be apply to all, so decision for help is made on case to case basis.
However, before making any decision for help trust makes sure that the person is really needy. Once the trust make sure that the person “deserves” they support them with developing a source of income. This is explained further in below case study approach. For privacy reason name and location of the person are not mentioned in these case studies.
It may be noted that these loans are made from “Zakat” money. Hence, its not loan to be paid with certain percentage of “intrest rate” but instead its non-refundable small financial help with no motivation/demand of return. But of course for that money one need to be “deserving person” which again is verified by the Trust representative in that area.

OTHER PROGRAMS FOR POOR AND NEEDY PEOPLE

As stated earlier, woman is also affected from the war and militancy in Darra Adam Khel. However, given our Tribal structure, it is not easy to provide a proper work/help to the woman of the Darra Adam Khel.
In this situation, Afridi Welfare Trust helps the poor and needy woman by providing them with Sewing Machines. During year 2011, 120 basic sewing machines were provided to the woman under this project with the total cost of Rs. 470,800. Additionally, 4 more advance sewing machines were provided to the woman who was skilled enough to use that. Afridi Welfare Trust spent Rs. 40000 for those advance sewing machines.
The main benefiters from this program are widows or that woman who is not married but still is healthy enough to use the machine productively. Again the confirmation of the deserving woman is made via the network of Afridi Welfare Trust Volunteers.

Afridi Welfare Trust tries its best to help the poor. Under Financial Help to the poor provides financial help to the poor for various infrastructural and household requirements. Afridi Welfare Trust spent Rs. 761350 for 55 such cases during year 2011. Every case is different and it is not feasible to presents all cases in this report. But just for orientation purposes, under this head needy people where helped with providing them “fans” , helping them with constructing their house where they were the major contributor and were short of small amounts to undertake their construction.
Afridi Welfare Trust recently started income support program. The main aim of this program is to help those widows and extreme poor people who are unable to earn the basic needs. For this purpose a monthly payment of Rs. 1500 to Rs. 3000 is paid depending upon the size of the family.
At present Afridi Welfare Trust is supporting around 5 families under income support program. However, we plan to expand it in next year.
The selection of the families for this program is made by the trust by themselves. The volunteers of the trust survey villages and they identify such families who are needy and deserving. Depending on the family size the monthly stipend for them are fixed. If a family has more kids, the trust tries to pay them the maximum in order to provide them little relief for the education of their kids.
During holy month of Ramadan Afridi Welfare Trust made “food packages” of daily use food items for the needy and poor people who were unable to afford it during fasting months. A food packet of around Rs. 1500 was made which contains food items used during Ramadan month. These were distributed among the needy and poor people. Afridi Welfare Trust spends Rs. 7, 80,000 on this project.
It is important to point out that Afridi Welfare Trust also focus on people with special need. The life of people with special requirement is very hard in general in Pakistan and in Tribal areas in particular. The hardness increases further if these people are poor. Such people in our society are also over looked by their parents where there hopes are from their healthy children. One the other hand, they do not get any support from outside word. This converts them to a so called burden on the society.
Keeping in view this, Afridi Welfare Trust started a project which helps the poor and needy disable people of Darra Adam Khel. However, it may be noted that this program is not limited to Darra Adam Khel. During 2011, Afridi Welfare Trust spent Rs. 140600 on this project. The details are given below in Table 7. The main expenditure is made on the provision of “wheel chairs” and “blind sticks”. Five cases were of the people with walking disabilities. They were provided with tricycles.
