Education

Education is the most Powerful weapon, We can use to change the World

The importance of Education Educationcannot be ignored by any society. The importance of education is very much clear from the teaching of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who also said to go even to China to get knowledge and education. On another time He (PBUH) said that it is compulsory for Muslim man and woman to get education/knowledge.

Keeping this in view, Afridi Welfare Trust focus mainly on education. As, we believe that by providing education to the needy people one can help them with getting their life better. They can be get out of poverty in long run. This chapter presents detailed overview of the process and expenditure undertaken by Afridi Welfare Trust since its creation.

SCHOOL EDUCATION FOR TALENTED BUT NEEDY STUDENTS” PROJECT OF AFRIDI WELFARE TRUST

Afridi Welfare Trust focuses mostly on school education. The main reason is that we believe that every child has the right to get primary education. And specially, those students who want to get education and are talent but are unable to continue their education due to financial resources.

In order to select student based on merit and need criteria, Afridi Welfare Trust has developed its own model of selection. This model is described below. It may be noted that we mainly focus on F. R Kohat, where we use this model fully. However, there are deserving people in other regions/areas as well but however, they are not selected via the below model. However, their “talent” and “need” is verified and confirmed by their past academic records and authentic sources, respectively. It is also important to mention that Afridi Welfare Trust keep full profile of every individual beneficiaries of its scholarship. However, due to privacy issue Afridi Welfare Trust does not publish their names and details.

Every year by end of March Afridi Welfare Trust arrange test to select candidates for their program. All the schools (both public and Private) in F. R. Kohat is informed to prepare their students for the tests. Tests are conducted in English, Mathematics and Urdu. The test of lower classes (1st class to fifth class) is verbal because government school examines for these classes are verbal. Based on the tests results for every class a merit list is prepared. Then based on financial space available with Afridi Welfare Trust for that year, and also the results of the students for various classes, quota of scholarships is set for every class. Thus merit criteria are satisfied.

Next stage is for confirmation of the “needy criteria”. For this purpose, Afridi Welfare Trust has representatives in every village/region of the F. R Kohat. They investigate each selected candidate and verify their financial status. Once they confirm their financial status then Afridi Welfare Trust includes that candidate for their financial support.

It is also important to mention that there is a two special seats for orphan kids in every class. However, they are also selected on merit but they have to compete for the scholarship among themselves rather than with whole competition candidates.

Financial Support

The scholarship consists of a full sponsoring of educational expenses. This includes admission fee, monthly school fee, uniform, books, transportation, and daily pocket money. Beside these finical help, students that secure first three positions get Rs. 2500, Rs. 1500, and Rs. 1000, respectively.

Monitoring of the candidates/scholarships

Progress of all the beneficiaries of the scholarship is monitored during the whole year. The continuation of the scholarship is purely linked to the performance. Parents of the students are kept informed about the progress of their kids. If a student perform badly in certain subjects or as a whole (where performance are judged by the 1st/2nd terms of the school), parents are warned about their kids performance and are asked if required students can be provided with home tuition in certain subjects.

If despite of all this facts, a kid does not perform well or they do not show any more interest than the scholarship of that student is transferred to another student in next round of scholarships for which students are selected again with the above stated procedure.

SCHOOL EDUCATION FOR TALENTED BUT NEEDY STUDENTS” PROJECT IN F. R KOHAT

The selection test was held on 27and 28 March 2011. The test was conducted in two days because of two reasons. First, there were over 800 students which were not

It is clear that the distribution of scholarships in various classes is not uniform. There are many reasons for it. The major reason is that Afridi Welfare Trust prefer to get those students who are most talented. So if some classes contain more talented students than the others those classes get more scholarships. A clear example is that there was a student who got very good grades in class third and class fourth test while he was actually from class third. Another reason for unequal distribution of scholarships is that in higher school classes the students in government schools are trained in such a bad way that its almost impossible to get got outcomes in final year of their schooling.
Table 2 below provides the Average per student cost. Admission fee, uniforms and books payments are made once a year. Whereas, school fee, transportation costs and pocket money are paid every month to all students.
Accordingly, Afridi Welfare Trust on average spend Rs. 19, 110 per student per year. This shows that Afridi Welfare Trust spend around Rs. 1,299,480 (68 x Rs.19110).

Besides that, those scholarship holder students who performed best during their academic year were provided with cash prizes. The cash prizes of Rs. 2500, Rs. 1500 and Rs. 1000 were given to First, Second and Third Position holder in every class, respectively.

SCHOOL EDUCATION FOR TALENTED BUT NEEDY STUDENTS” IN OTHER AREAS

Afridi Welfare Trust is not limited to just Darra Adam Khel F. R Kohat, despite the fact that it is originated from there and their main focus is on F. R Kohat. Table 3, below provides details of the “talented but needy” students of Iqra Public School Peshawar, Islamia Collaget and other private schools in Peshawar, whom studies were fully or partially supported by Afridi Welfare Trust.
In Total 10 students were supported for their full educational expenses during year 2011. Among these 10 students, numbers of students who were orphan and have little family income were also provided with pocket money.
The total annual expenses on these 10 students were Rs. 99, 600 during year 2011. This shows on average Rs. 9,600 per student annual expenditure.

COLLAGE LEVEL EDUCATION

As stated earlier, the main focus of Afridi Welfare Trust is on school education. However, we do understand the need of college and higher education. For this purpose, Afridi Welfare Trust also supports the ‘talented but needy” students of college and University. However, Afridi Welfare Trust spends less on these students because it is more expensive. Secondly, we want to support our school students till the university level and to make their career.
Afridi Welfare Trust started their project named as “College Education for Talented but Needy Students”. The details and performance of that projected is given below.

The college students are informed via notice that they can apply for the scholarship. The students are selected mainly on their previous academic record.
Then via network of the Afridi Welfare Trust which contains representative of almost every region of F. R Kohat, we confirm the financial status of the selected candidates. Once, that is confirmed, the students scholarship are confirmed by Afridi Welfare Trust.

Financial Support

Like school education scholarship, this scholarship also sponsors full education of the selected candidates. The candidates get monthly pocket money along with transportation costs, book expenses, uniforms expenses. Their admission fee and monthly fee are also paid by Afridi Welfare Trust.
The scholarship is mainly for two years (full intermediate or graduation level) subject to extension for another two years (in case of intermediate) if the performance of candidate is good which can be monitored from F.A/F.Sc board examinations.

It is important to mention that the only college in Darra Adam Khel, F. R Kohat is closed due to “law and order” situation since 2007. And literally there was no college education for male/female students of the area from last few years.
It is the credit of Afridi Welfare Trust that it started college classes with the help of a private school named “oxford school” with the name “oxford college”. However, being a private party, the college is mostly dependent on the help from Afridi Welfare Trust via the students it sponsors for the studies.
During year 2011 the expenses made by Afridi Welfare Trust in Oxford College is given below in Table 3. The cost is not equal for every student because transportation cost varies for students from different region of Darra Adam Khel. Total cost of the college education in Darra Adam Khel is Rs. 6, 30,400 which implies that per student cost per year is Rs. 30, 170.

Like School education, Afridi Welfare Trust also supports ‘needy and talented” college students studying in other nearby areas. However, majority of the students belong to F. R Kohat. The Selection criteria are same for college students as for the college students in F. R. Kohat.
In total 8 students are supported under “College Education for Talented but Needy” in other areas during 2011. In total Rs. 2, 45,270 were spending to cover all of their educational expenses. This includes admission fee, monthly fee, pocket money, transportation costs, book expenses and uniform expenses. This shows approximately around Rs. 30,659 per student per year. It may be noted that out of this 8 students three are studying in B.Sc where as 5 are studying in F.Sc.

TECHNICAL EDUCATION

It is important to point out that Afridi Welfare Trust is also supporting the “Talented and Needy” students of technical education. Students that belong to Darra Adam Khel or other regions may be benefited from this program.
In total 10 students were supported in various engineering diplomas during 2011. The details are provided in Table 4.

UNIVERSITY EDUCATION

The importance of Higher Education cannot be ignored. Afridi Welfare Trust is well aware of this fact. But due to lack of financial resources and being very expensive higher education, Afridi Welfare Trust is not too much focused on higher Education. However, Afridi Welfare Trust still supports some “Talented but Needy” students for their higher education.

The main criteria are same for obtaining financial support from Afridi Welfare Trust. If a student approach/contact Afridi Welfare Trust for financial help for their studies. Afridi Welfare Trust process their application/request based on “talent” and “need” both judge from the previous academic record and through verification via own network of Afridi Welfare Trust, respectively. After confirmation, individual request is entertained with the specific need and help is provided accordingly.
Scholarship
The scholarship mostly consists of full support of educational expenses along with pocket money, hostel expenses/transportation costs, books and clothes. However, due to very expensive university education and due to “higher pocket money” for “grown up” students, we keep the numbers of these scholarships to the minimum level.

Under this program Rs. 2,55,259 were spend on four students which implies annual cost of Rs. 63, 815 per year per student. It is worth mentioning that out of these four university students, two students are position holders in University and College level examines. But they were not able to continue their studies due to their financial constraints. Afridi Welfare Trust encourages them to continue their education with providing them the required finical help.
Beside regular support of students at school/college/university level education, Afridi Welfare Trust also spends money on some other educational activities. For example, there were cases, where some students were not able to pay their admission fee, however, they were in position to pay the monthly fee and other expenses. So, Afridi Welfare Trust supported them with providing them the initial admission fee. Similarly, few government schools were unable to arrange drinking water for the students. Government funding was not available and need was urgent. So, Afridi Welfare Trust helps them with providing them drinking water supply from the nearest village via pipeline.
In such accounts in total Afridi Welfare Trust spend around Rs. 2, 29, 200 during 2011 on around 15 cases/projects. This shows on average Rs.15280 per case per year.
